Yanusz Korczak’s reputation as a doctor, writer and educator has been inscribed in Jewish memory particularly around his devotion to children from his orphanage with whom he was deported to the Treblinka death camp.

Those were the last moments in the life of the Jewish educator who dedicated his life to children- through his books, the children journal he edited, the orphanages he had established and the numerous publications devoted to child’s world and to the pedagogical thought he developed throughout his life.

Throughout the course while viewing his ideas in the perspective of pedagogical thinking and keeping the East European Jewish context and perspective, we will read his important books and essays which always grasp the child at the center. Among them his famous stories- “Yotam the magician”, “King Matt the First”, “When I am little again” as well as the pedagogical ones- “How to Love a Child”, “The Child's Right to Respect” and more. We will screen films and documentaries on Korczak and his influence on the interwar child cultural and pedagogical scene. Furthermore, we will discuss his influence on the ways in which modern children legal rights and the social status of children evolved throughout the 20th century.
