המהפכה הדיגיטלית, שראשיתה, כמו המהפכה התעשייתית, במכונה, והמשכה בשינוי תרבותי כולל, מצטיירת כמזוהה באופן כמעט טוטלי עם הטכנולוגיות הווירטואליות שלה וכשבויה בשיח הטכנולוגי-עתידני-חדשני שהתפתח באותה מהירות כמעט בה הושקו החידושים הטכנולוגיים. שיח זה מושתת ברובו על אמונה בכוחו המשחרר של העולם הקיברנטי וביכולת ההעצמה וההרחבה, לא רק של תחושת המציאות והזהות שלנו, אלא גם של התפיסה וההבנה שלנו את ה'אני' ואת ה'עולם'.
הקורס ינסה לקיים בירור מושגי פילוסופי ביקורתי של המרכיבים הרעיוניים הבסיסיים בעולם התרבות הדיגיטלי, דרך שורה של טקסטים שלא רק עוקבים אחר דפוסי ההתפתחות של העולם הדיגיטלי, (ולעיתים גם מפרשנים אותה בהקשר היסטורי ותרבותי רחב), אלא גם מנסים לספק אבחנות והגדרות מושגיות רלבנטיות להתמודדות עם משמעותן של הטכנולוגיות הווירטואליות ועם אופני הייצור של משמעויות במרחב הקיברנטי.

Course description
The Digital Revolution (and the ensuing Information Revolution), like the Industrial Revolution, emerges from a mechanical invention as an all-encompassing cultural change, and is identified primarily with its virtual technologies. Its adherents moreover seem completely captivated by the futuristic-technological discourse produced alongside technological innovations. By and large, this discourse draws its strength from the belief in the liberating power of cyberspace and in its capacity to expand not merely our collective sense of identity and reality but also our very understanding of 'self' and the 'world'.
The course is designed to conduct a critical philosophical inquiry into the fundamental theoretical components of the digital world through a number of sources that both observe and interpret the course of digital evolution. Furthermore, it will attempt to provide conceptual distinctions and definitions that are relevant to tackling the meaning of virtual technologies and the modes of production and assignment of meaning in cyberspace.
