D:\Inetpub\shared\yedion\syllabus\06\2015\0621\0621118001_desc.txt סילבוס מקוצר אימפריות לא היו ואינן "מערביות", או מודרניות. אך התפשטות מדינות ותרבויות מערביות, בין המאה השמונה עשרה לימינו אנו, אל טריטוריות ולתרבויות שמחוץ לאירופה ולארה"ב, הייתה תופעה ייחודית . האימפריות המערביות החדשות התייחדו לא רק במימדי הענק שלהן ובעוצמה צבאית וטכנולוגית, אלא גם בכך שהיו נוכחות בחייהם, בהתנסויותיהם ובדמיונם של בני העידן המודרני —שולטים ונשלטים כאחד—ועצבו מדינות, כלכלה , זהויות לאומיות, מעמדיות ומיגדריות, ותרבויות—הן תרבות גבוהה, הן תרבות פופולארית וחיי יום- יום. הבנת התפתחות האימפריות והמגעים הבין-תרבותיים בין "מערב" (כאזור, או מקום גיאוגרפי וכדימוי) ו"מזרח" מאפשרת לנו להבין ולכתוב מחדש את ההיסטוריה של המודרניות. בשיעור נדון בראיית ה"מזרח" וה"מערב", הגדרתם ודמיונם בעידן הנאורות של המאה השמונה עשרה, נבחן את "האימפריות של החומרים": בדים וטבק, פורצלן וקפה, בתרבויות צריכה במאות השמונה עשרה והתשע עשרה באירופה ובמזרח התיכון, נבדוק תנועות לאומיות –באירופה, במזרח התיכון, וכן את הציונות, בזיקתן לקולוניאליזם, קשרים בין מלחמות מודרניות לאימפריות, בין אימפריאליזם לכלכלה—מתקופת התיעוש ועד לכלכלת הנפט, ובין אימפריאליזם לתרבות ההמונים המודרנית (למשל בתערוכות עולמיות, בקולנוע ובטלוויזיה ובקשרים) נבחן גם את הקשרים שבין אימפריאליזם לגלובליזציה בימינו Course description Empires are neither western nor modern entities. But the new western oversize empires that evolved between the 18th century and the present have been characterized not only by their technological and military power, but also in that they were present in the everyday life, the experience and the imagination of modern people—both the ruled and those who ruled them. Modern empires shaped states, economies, national identities, classes, cultures and genders. Thinking about these empires and the exchanges between “West” and “East”, enables us to understand and rewrite modern history. The course looks at major topics in the history of these empires, such as the fascination with the “Orient” in the Enlightenment; the 18th century consumption revolution and the material empires of goods like tea, coffee and porcelain, empires; slavery and religion; empires and nationalism across the world; the economies of empires—from the age of the Industrial Revolution to the era of oil; imperialism and its forms of power; imperialism and internationalism , and the relationship between past empires after de-colonization and globalization

אימפריות לא היו ואינן "מערביות", או מודרניות. אך התפשטות מדינות ותרבויות מערביות, בין המאה השמונה עשרה לימינו אנו, אל טריטוריות ולתרבויות שמחוץ לאירופה ולארה"ב, הייתה תופעה ייחודית . האימפריות המערביות החדשות התייחדו לא רק במימדי הענק שלהן ובעוצמה צבאית וטכנולוגית, אלא גם בכך שהיו נוכחות בחייהם, בהתנסויותיהם ובדמיונם של בני העידן המודרני —שולטים ונשלטים כאחד—ועצבו מדינות, כלכלה , זהויות לאומיות, מעמדיות ומיגדריות, ותרבויות—הן תרבות גבוהה, הן תרבות פופולארית וחיי יום- יום. הבנת התפתחות האימפריות והמגעים הבין-תרבותיים בין "מערב" (כאזור, או מקום גיאוגרפי וכדימוי) ו"מזרח" מאפשרת לנו להבין ולכתוב מחדש את ההיסטוריה של המודרניות.

בשיעור נדון בראיית ה"מזרח" וה"מערב", הגדרתם ודמיונם בעידן הנאורות של המאה השמונה עשרה, נבחן את "האימפריות של החומרים": בדים וטבק, פורצלן וקפה, בתרבויות צריכה במאות השמונה עשרה והתשע עשרה באירופה ובמזרח התיכון, נבדוק תנועות לאומיות –באירופה, במזרח התיכון, וכן את הציונות, בזיקתן לקולוניאליזם, קשרים בין מלחמות מודרניות לאימפריות, בין אימפריאליזם לכלכלה—מתקופת התיעוש ועד לכלכלת הנפט, ובין אימפריאליזם לתרבות ההמונים המודרנית (למשל בתערוכות עולמיות, בקולנוע ובטלוויזיה ובקשרים) נבחן גם את הקשרים שבין אימפריאליזם לגלובליזציה בימינו

Course description

Empires are neither western nor modern entities. But the new western oversize empires that evolved between the 18th century and the present have been characterized not only by their technological and military power, but also in that they were present in the everyday life, the experience and the imagination of modern people—both the ruled and those who ruled them. Modern empires shaped states, economies, national identities, classes, cultures and genders. Thinking about these empires and the exchanges between “West” and “East”, enables us to understand and rewrite modern history.
