D:\Inetpub\shared\yedion\syllabus\06\2017\0621\0621117101_desc.txt סילבוס מקוצר המאה ה-19 באמריקה הלטינית עומדת בסימן של לידה מחדש; לידה מחדש של מרחב שהוא בעת ובעונה אחת חלק מ"המערב" ומחוצה לו. הסדר הקולוניאלי שבנו ספרד ופורטוגל לאחר הכיבוש במאה ה-16, ושעמד על כנו במשך שלוש מאות שנה, קורס. מתוך ההריסות מתחילים לבצבץ ולהתפתח דפוסים שלטוניים, חברתיים, תרבותיים ורעיוניים שונים. השיעור עוקב אחר תהליכים אלו, כמו גם אחר הפרשנויות המחקריות הגדולות שהוענקו להם, זאת תוך התמקדות במקרים היסטוריים ספציפיים ובגיבורים בשר ודם. נעסוק בשורשיהם, מהלכם והשלכותיהם של מאבקי העצמאות בראשית המאה; ב"עידן הקאודיוס" השמרני-עממי שבא בעקבותיהם; בדרכה המיוחדת של ברזיל–עבדות ומלוכה; בהתמודדות בין ליברלים לשמרנים במחצית המאה; בהשתלבותה המחודשת של היבשת במערכת הכלכלית הטרנס-אטלנטית ובמודרניזציה החומרית בשליש האחרון של המאה; באקלים הרעיוני והשלטוני של "סדר וקדמה" נוסח-אירופה, שהשתרר לקראת סוף התקופה, בהתנגדות לו, ובסימנים הראשונים לדעיכתו. Course description The nineteenth century in Latin America is a period of rebirth. The colonial order which had been established by Spain and Portugal, and which had been in place for three hundred years, collapses. From the debris, some new political, social, cultural and ideational forms begin to emerge and develop. The course traces these processes as well as their major scholarly interpretations, examining concrete historical cases and real human beings of flesh and blood. Course description

The nineteenth century in Latin America is a period of rebirth. The colonial order which had been established by Spain and Portugal, and which had been in place for three hundred years, collapses. From the debris, some new political, social, cultural and ideational forms begin to emerge and develop. The course traces these processes as well as their major scholarly interpretations, examining concrete historical cases and real human beings of flesh and blood. Main topics: The independence struggles; “the age of caudillos”; Brazil’s special path—monarchy and slavery; the confrontation between liberals and conservatives at mid-century; the reintegration of the region into the Atlantic economy and the material modernization during the last third of the century; the dominant intellectual and political climate of “order and progress” at the end of the period, its opponents, and initial demise.
