נבחן מספר סוגיות מרכזיות בפילוסופיה דרך פרדוקסים. נדגים בכך את הטענה שפרדוקסים אינם רק שעשוע או קוריוז אינטלקטואלי; כל פרדוקס רציני מצביע על בעיה פילוסופית עמוקה ומאפשר דיון בה באופן חי. הסוגיות שנבחן הן: ספקנות, דילמת האסיר, הרציונליות של הצבעה בבחירות, החידה החדשה של האינדוקציה, המטפיזיקה והראציונליות של רגשות, דטרמיניזם וחופש רצון, אפשרות ההונאה העצמית.דרישות מקדימות: רצוי מאוד קורס מבוא בלוגיקה.
מטלת הקורס: בחינת כיתה (משקל בציון 2/3) ותרגיל (משקל בציון 1/3).
Course description
We will examine some central philosophical questions by studying paradoxes. This will demonstrate that paradoxes aren’t just an intellectual curiosity; that every serious paradox points to a deep philosophical problem, and provides an opportunity for a stimulating engagement with it. We will consider the following issues: scepticism, the prisoner’s dilemma, the rationality of voting, the new riddle of induction, the metaphysics and rationality of emotions, determinism and free will, the possibility of self-deception.
Prerequisite: (highly recommended) an introductory course in logic.
The grade will be based on an end of term exam and two short essays to be handed in during the semester.
