Course description As the founding father of modern subjectivism, Descartes is often held as the philosopher with which we witness the emergence of the modern subject. The concept of modern subject, however pervasive, has been the subject of much criticism and debate by various continental and the analytic thinkers, of which some can be traced back to the modern era. In this seminar we will discuss various modern conceptions of subjectivity and of self-other relations. Special emphasis will be placed on Leibniz’s doctrine of the place of the other, which anticipates several current and 20th century perspectives of the issue.

As the founding father of modern subjectivism, Descartes is often held as the philosopher with which we witness the emergence of the modern subject.
