We will examine the important contribution of gender studies, studies of the history of sexuality, and queer history and theory to the understanding and rewriting of modern history. Topics will include: sexual hybridity in the 18^th century; sexuality, aristocracy and the monarchy; the modern revolutions and the promise of gender equality; the medicalization of homosexuality; the development of modern feminism; sex and city life; industrialization, consumption and gender; modern science and sexual minorities; men, women and total wars; the historical development of parent-child relations; men and women under authoritarian regimes; gender and the welfare state, and the 1960s and the sexual revolution.
