Prerequisites: Heat Transfer, Fluid mechanics (1)
Introduction: Classification of separation processes, choice of separation method. The principles of diffusion and mass transfer; mass balance and “operation lines”; stage-type separation: ideal stage, stage efficiency, determining the required number of stages. Gas-Liquid Operations (absorption and stripping): solubility of gases in liquids; stage-type absorption; continuous operation (transfer units - NTU); absorption with chemical reaction, equipment design principles. Liquid-Liquid Operations (Extraction): liquid equilibria; stage-type extractors; continuous extractors, principles of extractors design. Solid-Fluid Operations (Adsorption and Ion Exchange): physical and chemical adsorption; adsorption isotherms; stage-type and continuous adsorption; fixed-bed adsorption. Ion Exchangers: principles and applications; equilibria; rate of ion exchange.
