1. Introduction: The ISI channel and its significance.
2. The AWGN channel
• Channel model: Continuous bandlimited AWGN channel, equivalent baseband channel, discrete-time channel.
• Modulation: generalized Nyquist criterion, single-tone, DMT.
• Capacity: AWGN capacity, spectral efficiency, gap to capacity.
3. Single-input single-output (SISO) dispersive channel
• Dispersion in the time domain
• Channel model: continuous channel, equivalent discrete-time channel.
• Single-tone detection: optimal detection (MLSE), equalization, precoding, Price’s result, approaching capacity by equalization and AWGN coding.
• DMT: effect of ISI in DMT, cyclic prefix, equalization for DMT, bit loading, approaching capacity with DMT.
4. Multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) channel
• Channel model: analogy to ISI channel and differences, single-user vs. multiuser.
• Notions of MIMO capacity MIMO capacity under different assumptions about channel knowledge.
• Receiver structures for MIMO.
5. Diversity techniques
• Diversity notion and its importance in wireless communications.
• SIMO channel: maximal ratio combining, diversity gain, array gain.
• MISO channel: diversity gain of random coding, Alamouti scheme, space-time codes.
