Short Course Description

This course will provide students with an understanding of key concepts and tools relevant to urban sustainability policy with an emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainable use of resources in construction and urban design. Using selected examples of different cities and programs, the course will familiarize students with different types of policies, tools and approaches, as well as the contribution of different actors to sustainability initiatives from municipalities to the private sector and the impact of individual residents. Students will be exposed to a range of theoretical and policy perspectives on urban sustainability and will learn to critically assess different paradigms in relation to achieving this goal.
Based on class lectures, discussion and readings, students will submit a seminar paper on a case study of an urban sustainability issue including proposed methods of assessing and tackling the issue. The paper should be grounded academically with relevance also for urban stakeholders and decision-makers.
