Syllabus of Materials Selection – 0581.4115
Academic Year: 2017-2018, Second Semester
Course hours and location:
3 hours, Sunday 9:00-12:00, Class 203 "Software Engineering" building
Objective:
1. Learning different methods for materials selection, depending on applications and mechanical design.
2. Understand the various materials groups, with emphasis on features and applications.
3. Selection of metal alloys including processes and treatments.
4. Preventing engineering failures by selecting the correct materials
Credit Points: 3
Course Description:
Many engineering failures occur as a result of a mismatch between the choice of material and the service conditions, between the choice of material and the production process or between material selection and mechanical design. The material and the mechanical engineers must assimilate the material selection at all stages of mechanical design from the design stage, through the production process to the quality control of the finished product. Understanding of the materials selection and design in mechanical systems provides a practical knowledge for failure prevention and selection of manufacturing processes for achieve optimum engineering performances. During the course we will meet criteria for the selection of materials and the various metal alloys, including the processes and treatments. The course is an extension of general knowledge in materials engineering and assists in the training of the materials / mechanical engineer for industry and research.
